One of the reasons the Daytona thing isn't happening any more and why so many want to but don't do the same thing...track rental and insurance.
For example, if I'm not mistaken, Bristol Motor Speedway wanted $15,000 for rental & insurance. Something not easy to pay especially not knowing how many cars would show up. Even if you had 100 cars show up, that's $150 per car just to take a few laps at 50 mph.
I would imagine the cost at Charlotte Motor Speedway would be as much or higher than Bristol.
Plus the club insurance we have for meets would not cover any type of competition driving. Even though this wouldn't be a competition thing, it's on a speedway.

Rick's right.... the track rental and insurance they require is outrageous. Just to clarify some numbers, the Bristol track rental for an 8 hour day was $3500 which covered track & emergency personnel for the day. Ok, reasonable.... we could cover that with 100 cars @ $35.00 each.... not a problem. The killer is the insurance requirement. Bristol wanted $5,000,000 ($5 million!) insurance coverage for the day. Most of the clubs insurance will only go $1,000,000 and the track wouldn't come down. The cheapest I could find a $5,000,000 insurance policy was $15,000. Now, all that being said.... those numbers are from 2 years ago.... there is no telling what they would charge now! Good luck on getting Lowes Motor Speedway. If you can work it out I would be there! Charlotte Motor Speedway would be a great cruise event!!!!. I don't know how they do it but the Empire State Cruisers have "Cruise The Glen" and we get to take a few laps on the road course. Might be worth an email to one of them and see how they do it. Maybe they "know someone"...... www.cruisetheglen.com/

Ok well what if we try and make it a Mopar thing. Get some of the Nascar guys out (Kasey, Kurt Bush, Pettys,). I feel we can get alot of the old Mopar ppl out for a saturday at the speedway. Get some of the old muscle cars and the new cars. Yes i know it will take alot of work but hey its a start and who knows it might catch on. Also not sure if they have a Mopar day anywhere around if so lets crash it.

Well... Apparently, each track has their own special polices in regards to track use. Watkin's Glen allows cars on the track everyday from noon to 1pm. They charge $25.00 a car, and you must sign a waiver when entering the track. They get a break on the track entrance fee due to allowing the track to cater lunch.
So has anybody even asked Lowe's?

Hey Tom, that sounds right up your alley since Mr Petty is a Honorary member of the palmetto cruisers club.

We did the Watkins Glen cruise 2 years ago and it was an outstanding event. For the usual $25 track fee you get 3 laps behind a pace vehicle. As a group we got 2 laps and stopped on the front straight to take pics and switch drivers if you wanted to and then 2 more laps. Then we went to the infield area and went to the souvenir shop and then over to lunch at the restaurant right at the track. The SCCA was there racing on the Sunday we were there and they fit us inbetween heats. We ran the WHOLE WG track, not just what the Nascar boys run on. The restaurant has an observation deck on the roof and you can go up there and watch them race. Too cool! The food was EXCELLENT!!! Some of the people who went the first year said they were going back because the food was so good. I gotta agree, we were not disappointed. One of the organizers for the WG event is the Chief of Police in WG so it does get the group some perks. If you are thinking about doing an out of state event, this one was worth hitting. We couldn't make it last year and they had the Sat. night dinner and the Sunday lunch at the track restaurant. Going to try and make it this year if I can. Watkins Glen has boatloads of winerys to visit if you're into wine and they have a racing museum in town. Saturday car show was in the park right at the base of one of the finger lakes. We did manage to hit about 82 MPH down the front straight but you need to kind of lag back from the car in front of you so you can get some running room. It gives you a real appreciation of the Nascar guys going into the first turn at about double that speed. I was praying the brakes wouldn't fade.........

You could check out Virgina International Raceway (VIR). It's not to far: 15 miles east of outside of Danville. I've never been, but a friend told me that they are alway sponsoring car club events.
