I agree, Virginia International Raceway would be great. I'd heard about VIR before, but really hadn't "thought" about it. Looks like great fun! ;D
But now I kinda feel guilty, I've never been and the place is only about 40 miles from home!
Any way, while I was browsing their site www.virclub.com/vir/ I came across an event that looked promising.
Holiday Laps
Alton, Va. (Dec. 5) – With the holiday season upon us, the time has come once again for one of VIRginia International Raceway’s most popular traditions, the Holiday Laps program. The Holiday Laps program allows fans and enthusiasts to drive their personal cars around the historic 3.27-mile circuit, under controlled conditions behind a pace car, in exchange for a donation of money, non-perishable food items or toys equivalent to $25. All donations and proceeds will be donated to the Danville Salvation Army.
The Holiday Laps program for 2005 will take place on Friday, December 9, between the hours of 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m. Participants should arrive at VIR’s main gate between the hours of 11:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Track touring sessions will be organized throughout the day based on participation. As an added bonus for fans, F&S Photography will be onsite taking photos, and have offered a free 8x10 photo to all participants.
This year, for the first time, VIR will be working in conjunction with Danville radio stations WAKG-FM and WBTM-AM in their annual “Christmas Bucks for Kids” holiday-season fund-raising drive. Last year the stations raised in excess of their $100,000 goal. This year, they have raised their goal to $103,000 and VIR hopes that the Holiday Laps program will help them to surpass that number.
“We’re really pleased to have a wonderful facility like VIR in our area,” said WAKG/WBTM sales manager Kay Price, “and it’s great that they are so community-oriented. We have more than 1500 families in our area who have applied for assistance this year, and that includes more than 2000 children ranging in age from zero to 12 years old. We feel the need is greater this year due to the state of the economy in Southside Virginia, and we appreciate the efforts of VIR to join forces with us in this worthy cause with the Holiday Laps program.”
For VIR co-owner Connie Nyholm, the Holiday Laps program is one of her favorite events of the year.
“It’s always fun to be able to let the fans come out and see what it’s like to drive the track,” she said, “but what makes it really special is to be able to do that and combine it with an opportunity to give something back to this wonderful community. We are proud to be working with WAKG and WBTM in their ‘Christmas Bucks for Kids’ program for the first time, and it’s always a pleasure to work with the Salvation Army. We hope everyone will come out and enjoy the chance to drive our great racetrack and, at the same time, help those who are less fortunate.”
VIRginia International Raceway is a multi-purpose road racing facility, located on the Dan River between Danville and South Boston, Va., and just north of historic Milton, N.C. In addition to its 3.27-mile natural-terrain road racing circuit (designed to be operated as two autonomous, full-service courses), VIR is the cornerstone of VIR Club, America’s first motorsports country club; the VIR Raceplex Industrial Park; the VIR Gallery, which is a sales showroom for high-end collector and racing cars; the VIR Safety and Security Institute, which provides specialized training for U.S. Government and military groups; The Lodge at VIR, a 27-room hotel overlooking the track; and the Oak Tree Tavern, a full-service restaurant located within the circa-1840 Plantation Clubhouse.
VIR made history from 1957 to 1974 and is doing so again. The renovated original circuit has 17 challenging turns and 130 feet of elevation change. In addition to spectator events, the track is also available to rent for testing, driving schools and club days.
