Timing belt has broken, and will be replaced today, my question is the 2001 engine listed as non-interference, meaning that no valves should be broken or is it an interference engine meaning that the heads will need new valves, seats, etc. and machined? Any help would be great f4rom all you gearheads out there.

Roger, This is what I have read and understood concerning this question:
The PT engine is 'non-interference' meaning that the valves cannot hit the pistons once the timing belt breaks. HOWEVER it is 'interference' related to the valves themselves, meaning that they can hit each other if the engine is turned over or someone tries to crank it AFTER the belt breaks.
So the advice is...if you have 80,000 plus miles on your PT and you're going down the highway and it shuts off then chances are that the timing belt just broke. If you do suspect that then DO NOT try to crank the engine. Have it towed to Rick Hendrick Jeep Chrysler and if they try to crank it once you tell them that you suspect the timing belt broke then THEY are responsible for the valve damage that may occur from them trying to crank it.
You should also replace the water pump and belt tensioner at the same time of the timing belt replacement.
YES this will be VERY expensive to have done at the dealer but this is one of those rare cases that I believe is best done by those folks.

Here is a quote from PT Do It Yourself.net"Replacing the timing belt is a challenging job, which involves removing numerous components to access the belt. The service manual outlines the procedure in 25 steps, plus 6 sub-procedures. You will need a service manual, skill and the necessary tools and equipment to DIY. (The recommended service change interval is 90k miles under schedule B.) The PT engine is a non-interference motor, but only to a degree. Although the pistons will not hit the valves, the valves from both camshafts can hit each other. Valves hitting each other are very bad".

Thanks everyone, should know in an hour or 2 if the valves are damaged, but either way I will have the PT back on the road by the end of the week ;D

OK no vavle train damage, replaced water pump, idler, belt, etc, back on the road, $672. 49, works for me, so in the last month, new oil pan, new radiator, new hoses and belts, plus everything from today, good for another 80,000 (s)miles right. ;D

From what I understand there will be no valve damage as long as the cams aren't turned once the belt breaks.

You are 100% correct sir, the oldest son bought the PT, just bought a boat, and is getting a F-150, 4X4, told me I could have the PT back, not a problem with me as I have always loved my PT. Never wanted to sell it in the first place but he pushed my buttons very hard so I would let him have it. Being the first one ever in S.C. I need to keep it in the family so you may see "OLD SCHOOL " again in Oct. at MB8
