Last week my check engine light came on. I took it to a local repair shop this morning and he said he reset it and hopefully it would not come back on. It was on again when I went to bring the car home. He is now saying that I probably need to replace the computer at a cost of $1,000! I have been Googling error codes and my code is P1684 which says the battery has been disconnected at some point during the last 50 starts. I don't think it has unless it has come loose at some point. Does this sound correct? Do I need a new computer for this or is there something else I should look at or do before I pull the trigger on $1k repair? Has anyone else had this problem?
During the summer, I had several things repaired/replaced. Not sure if any of them had to do with disconnecting the battery or not. Car seems to be running fine otherwise.
Thanx
Karen

I vote for a bad battery. Our computers do weird things when the battery gets low. You may not even experience hard starts when the conditions happen. I bet your battery is weak enough that the voltage gets pulled low enough during a start to trigger the threshold of a reset. Even if you had to replace the computer, you should be able to get one for ~$300-400. Go get a second opinion.

The battery was replaced December 2009 as well as the battery terminal top post protectors. This summer I had some mounts/brackets replaced that I was told were bad, cooling fan module, water pump, and timing belt.
I am definitely getting a 2nd opinion before I pay $1,000 for another repair.
