Pam, Are your friends 17 inch wheels stock wheels that came on the PT? If so, not sure that the 15's will fit. If the PT came with factory stock 17's, they probably have 4 wheel disc brakes and I'm not quite sure the 15's will go over the brake calipers. Plus dropping from a 17 to a 15 will throw the speedometer and ABS off, not to mention the traction control if they have it on theirs.
If the PT came with 15's and they switched to 17's and going back to 15's...completely disregard that first paragraph.

I think the base model was the only one that came with 15" on it and they had disc front and drum rears to the best of my knowledge.

Right you are but not sure the rotor/caliper on the front is the same on the disc/drum as it is on the disc/disc.
Even if it was, the ABS and traction control would be thrown off terribly if they were on the original car. Unless of course he got a tall enough tire to make it somewhere between 27.75 and 29.25 inches tall. The stock tires are 28.50 tall and that's how the traction control and ABS is set up. You have 3/4 an inch play either way before it screws the settings up.

The PT in question is a 2003 base model, the reason for the 15's is that that the 17's use the low profile tires and they want to put a larger walled tire on the car. They have ruined 2 rims already. What is the price on the 15's?
Thanks,
Pam

You have 3/4 an inch play either way before it screws the settings up. I was under the impression that all PT speedos were calibrated the same and that as the rim size went up, the profile of sidewall went down. I believe that that the 15 inch tires run a 65 sidewall, the 16's a 55 sidewall and the 17s a 40 or 45 sidewall, but that all three stand the same height +/- a an insignificant amount. My concern would be that the 17 inch wheel is running a bigger brake and that is where you would run into problems with a 15inch rim. A base or touring model with 15" wheels could switch to the 17" without a problem, but it wouldn't work the other way around. Has it been determined if the 17s that are coming off, are OEM 17s with the larger brakes and not aftermarkets that replaced 15 or 16s to begin with?
