I am a new member and know virtually nothing about preparing my car for judging in a PT club show. Despite this, while attending one last week in Charlotte, I was persuaded to enter my car (road/bug grime, rain spots and all). With 15-20 minutes of prep time, of course I didn't win. And that's okay, because some nice looking cars did. Problem is, since I didn't receive a copy of the judge's scoresheet, I have no idea how badly/ how many ways/ in what areas my car failed. Is this (no scoresheet/ critique for losers) a standard club procedure? Would be far more likely to enter another show, if I knew some of the things I need to work on. Thanks to anyone who can offer help.

Chuck, Not sure if the car show you entered used 'judges' and 'scoresheets' but if so, the entrants normally do not see the scoresheets or whatever was documented to determine the award winners. This can cause more harm than good.
Some car shows will have 'participant' judging in which you the participant will vote for other classes besides the one you are entered in. In this case you will turn in your ballot to be tabulated and once again you will not see the final tally numbers but simply the top vote getters will win the 'alloted' awards.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. The important thing is just to have fun, enjoy the fellowship and maybe learn from seeing what others have done to their cars.
Trust me... after seeing your car you WILL win some awards. Just keep entering ;D

I've been to quite a few PT shows and a good many open shows where all car types are allowed. No time have I received a score sheet or judges sheet. Not sure if this is standard procedure or if other shows do provide score sheets. I've had people request them on shows I've been involved with but actually very few. The big show we had a couple years ago in Myrtle Beach when we had 290 PT's, probably no more than 10 people asked for scoresheets.
Like Tom says, you potentially are opening a can of worms when you provide data on how the cars scored. Usually that info is only privey to the judges and announcer.

I've been in many car shows, some just PT's and some open car shows (everyone's invited) and have won a few of trophies (Stock Class) in the last 2 years. Now mind you, I've been going to shows for 8 years and it wasn't until a couple of years ago a CPTC member showed me how to detail a car for a show. I was amazed.... you clean everything... the body, inside door jams, under the hood, inside the trunk/tailgate, wheel wells, gosh... inside the car, every little nook and cranny... tires and rims..... and don't forget the engine! LOL! My response was this is too much like work! But by taking that person's advise, I've done better in the shows. There are so many gorgeous cars out there I just shine her up and walk away to visit with all my friends. Trophies are nice but visiting with all my cruiser friends is better! As far as judging sheets.... I've never been given one with my scores on it. I was given a sheet once that told me what the judges would be looking at.... Becky

Becky's right. Clean everything and anything. If you don't open your hood, no need to clean under there but there are many shows that require you to open all doors, the hood and trunk/tailgate. A spotless car won't assure you of a win, but with less than a clean car, you can be assured of not winning. It's the tie breaker.

One place folks often miss is the wheel wells...make sure they're clean & you have a coat or two of ArmorAll in there! Ask John about the judges at Farmington Mopar Show asking him to raise his hood... ;D

listen to these folks, they know what they're talking about. My car is a daily driver that has the usual dings and nicks, but when I show it I try to clean everything I can reach. This has helped me get a few trophies, but the real thing to always remember is what Tom said "it's all about having fun with old friends and making new ones." The statements about cleaning under your hood is very true also. The last two shows I have attended I placed first and a Dodge Nitro placed second. The Nitro had a lot more mods than I did (very nice car), But, he never opens his hood. so, when the score sheets are added up he has a zero under the engine section. Anyway, have fun and good luck.

And remember the infamous 'fuel door cavity area' ? Oh yes, don't forget to open that fuel door and clean in there. You never know... that could be the difference between an award or not

In my opinion the best thing to leave a PT show with is Great Friends, everything else is just details. In the past 8 years that I have been showing I have brought home more trophies then friends but the friends are what make it all worth while. As many of you know i don't really clean my car anymore for a shows, because a day or weekend spent laughing and having fun with my PT friends and family is better then any trophy out there.

I've been to a few car shows myself,I've won a few and lost a few, but I ALWAYS have fun thats a given. If it stops being fun then I'm gonna quit going. As far as scoresheets I've never been offered one nor have I ever ask for one, but after the show I have ask a judge what he was looking for in a car so I can improve my car's appearance for the next show.

I have asked once, and quickly came to the conclusion that it really just didn't matter to me. Win or Loose I just go for the fun and friendships.....

I have far more friends than trophys. I've made more friends at shows than I've won. They're worth far more and much more valuable. I gotten terrific ideas looking at other' imagination with their cars. That's the fun for me...hearing the stories, seeing the joy. What a "win" that is.

I'm like everyone else, the people are the best part about the shows. I've only been to 3 shows so far, and got one award, which I was thrilled about. I always wash and wax mine the day before, every nook and cranny. And I take detail spray and tire shine with me to the show to give the car a final wipe down after I'm there. Mine is a daily driver (about 220 miles a day!) so she isn't perfect, but I try my best to keep her nice.

I agree with all - my car is definitely a daily driver, 20000 miles on it over 8 months! Getting all that cleaned off isn't always easy and I've never won an award, but that's not why I enter. Sure, an award is nice, some bragging rights, but I've had a total blast at every show I've attended. Rain or shine, hot or cold, the people are the reason I attend. It's just fun being around others with similar interests. And it's not just the show, the before and after events are fun too. The most fun I've had is in the meets where we actually cruise somewhere and end up at a show for judging, or something like that. Your heart really pings when you are in the midst of a long line of PT's, cruisin down the road, bystanders honking and waving as you go by!! That's a real treat. And some of these events aren't about the judging at all, like joining Miss B last year at the Light Show at Bristol Motor Speedway. We made an entire weekend out of that event! Anyway, sounds like you'll have fun too joining, and I hope to meet you sometime.

ya know, trying to win an award is cool and all. me, i would rather just be with fellow PT owners and have a good time with good friends. just my opinion
