I took my car to a paint and collision shop I've done business with before. I've been very pleased with them and their prices. They are not hurting for business and told me I'd have at least a 6 week wait for my proposed paint job.
I need to get the dings and paint chips taken care of. Lots of things on the hood and couple things on the sides and nothing on the back. Their proposal was to remove all of the chrome (and if not able to salvage for me to replace it), strip the car down to bare medal and start from ground zero.
Cost $4500!!!
For those of you who have seen my car and may have had major painting done to your own cars, is this a normal procedure? I didn't think the car needed such radical measures. No change in color, no added anything.
Am I just a tightwad or did the shop misunderstand what I needed and wanted? And no they were not taking advantage of a female because my technical advisor was there with me.

That price is probably typical for a full to the metal paint job. But I don't see why they would need to take it down that far all over. Maybe at some of the deep nicks...maybe. Most nicks don't go that far into the paint or you would be seeing rust. I would shop around.

Yep I'm with Rick, no need to take to the bare metal.I'd shop around too if it were me.

There is absolutly no reason to bring the car down to the metal, and if they are careful they can salvage your chrome. I have had more paint jobs on my cars then most, good thing my husband paints cars for a living, even drastic changes don't requier that kind of work, or that kind of price tag. If that was what a job like that cost everyone, I would be living in a masion on the ocean. For $4500 you could repaint the car in candy colors and air brush some graphics on it.

I'm having my spoiler repainted and having the guy touch-up various problem areas on mine for +/- $150 ( Thanks again James for the tip! ) Recalling the last time I saw your car it did NOT look like it required that drastic of a paint job!!!

Thanks everyone.
No rust anywhere on my car. Only one really deep nick which I had an emergency patch job done as soon as I found it. We don't drive it in bad weather and it is garaged when we are home.
I have a couple more places to shop around.

Yeah way to pricey! My dad had a big flame job done to his pt and goin down to baremetal is overkill...

Yep, shop around. I repainted my sons 85 Trans Am in Jan 07 and with paint and parts etc. my cost was somewhere around $1,500 to $1,600. Now that does NOT include any labor which was extensive and he and I did. Since the paint job that was on the car was shot, we sanded the hood, roof and and rear deck to the metal and the rest of the car was thoroughly sanded.
Your car should only need a good sanding or possibly a good scuff, fix any dings/doinks and then repainted. If you're changing color then add in primer/sealer too. Depending on how much chrome or other items you need to remove before the repaint you have to figure in that to your labor too. The more stuff YOU can remove first will lower that cost. Also most of the Chrysler paint colors are a 2 step which adds cost (base coat (color) and clear coat)
Going to bare metal and them removing everything (locks, door handles, headlights, painting the door jams etc. etc. could conceivably cost you what the first estimate was.
Unless your car is really in bad shape I can't see taking it to bare metal. Sounds like someone is trying to make a tidy profit.

Thanks everyone. I shopped around and got more estimates. As soon as I return from the Coastal Carolina Cruise I'll be taking Jayde plus her two brothers in to a local Lyncburg shop for painting. Total for all 3 is less than that original estimate. . . 04 Seamist PT . . . 75 MonteCarlo (just noticed a chip when that huge hood was misaligned ) . . . 03 H2 decided to get it two toned since I saved so much money.
As for doing some of the work ourselves. My Technical Advisor refuses to touch my cars because of the what if factor.
The only reason I'm waiting is because I remember the sand blasting at the OBX.

That sandblasting was on Ocrakoke and this time the cruise is no way near there. And besides, that sandblasting was a freebie.

I am still finding sand in crevices from that sand blasting ;D. That was a bad thing on that cruise, but the worst was watching Dolan's PT hanging off the back of the ferry

You should have tried to walk in that sandblast. I had forgotten about Dolan's car hanging off the back of the ferry I really didn't think we would get all those cars on there, but we did somehow.

TIGHT doesn't quite describe it. Don't know about the rest of you, but we were so close we couldn't get our driver side door open. Lennell
