I have a set of 16" American Racing wheels on my PT and I can't seem to get these darn things balanced right!
I have "wheel shimmy" that's really bad at freeway speeds!
A person on the PTE board suggested that I look into getting some "hub spacers" installed to make a more secure & flush fit with the wheel and the mounting surface.
Can anyone here point me in the right direction towards getting this bothersome issue fixed once & for all???
Thanks!

Tim: Where did you get the wheels, and who installed them? A rubber spacer is supplied with the installation kit, ie, lugs, wheel locks, spacers(4), lock & lug sockets all from AR. Who balanced them. I have a set of 17" 's and I have never had any balance problems. Have you checked the torque on the lugs. should be only about 95 ft lbs. To much will warp the hub/rotor or damange the lugs. Have you lost a weight? Had a wheel shop check them? the spacers are available from AR.

Hi Richard,
I brought them from a guy who posted them for sale on PTE, he sold them to me with tires, which I recently replaced...
The wheels were balanced at the tire shop (Wagner Tire in Lex )
I don't recall ever seeing these rubber spacers you talk about...where can I get a set of these locally???
Thanks for replying!

James,
Went to their web site but really didn't see anything there to help me locate these spacers...
Left them an e-mail describing my problem, hopefully they'll point me in the right direction towards getting these wheels balanced!

Tim:
Have they always been out of balance? When installed, what type of weights were used. Should be thin, waffer like with adhesive, and placed on the inside(only) of the wheels. Balancing on the car is ideal, but not mandatory. Were the wheels the correct type (fit) for the PT? Just thinking of possible causes. The spacers should have been supplied with the wheel; simple rubber "O" rings that seat the wheel to the hub. Did you receive an installation kit supplied by American Racing with the wheels? If all else fails, I 'd recommend going to another reputable tire/wheel dealer. DON'T LET THEM USE AN AIR WRENCH TO TIGHTEN THE LUGS. HAND TIGHTEN ONLY,USING A TORQUE WRENCH.
Good Luck, Richard

Richard,
Yeah, they've always had the "vibration/steering wheel shimmy" thing ever since I brought them...and they're used, not brand new in case u were misunderstanding about that.
The tire shops have been using the proper wafer thin weights to balance them...
The rubber spacers were NOT supplied with the set when the package arrived! (James, do you remember seeing these things when we unpacked them at your shop???)
Hopefully AR will tell me where I can get a set of the spacers from a local dealer...barring that I can hopefully order them directly from AR if the case need be...

Have you tried lug centric balancing? It worked on my smoothies.

Well went I purchased my smoothies I was told they had to be lug centric balanced in order to have a warrantee. So I called service stations and found one which has the machine to do lug centric. All I know is the weights on all on the inside of the rim and the results are a smooth ride.

OK ...here's the reply I got from American Racing... "I'm not exactly sure who provided information about "rubber" spacers, because there is no such thing. I'm guessing though, that you might be referring to hub centric rings (which are made of a hard plastic). These rings help center the wheel on the vehicle hub during installation. The part number for the applicable hub rings for your vehicle is: HR705710 Pricing and ordering information can be obtained from any American Racing retail dealer near you. If you need assistance finding a local dealer, please use the Dealer Locator on our website: www.americanracing.com/dealerlocator/index.asp?section=dlr I hope this information helps! Thank you for your interest in American Racing!" I will try to locate these hub rings from a local dealer...James, can you find out if Spencer Auto has these???

Tim:
I said rubber instead of plastic. Whatever, they should have come with the wheels. Hopefully they will help.
