I'm NOT a mecanic and can't even spell the word...where is the carbon and just how did they toubleshoot to find it.
I've heard of carbon in the exhaust...but of coarse that can be blown out on an interstate.
Sounds fishy to me.

I'm not a mechanic either but you can get carbon build up in the throttle body and sometimes upper intake manifold.I run some fuel system cleaner in all my cars about every 3-6 mos. to help keep the injectors clean and the intake. If throttle body gets caarbon build up I think you must take it off to clean with spray cleaner and then reinstall.

Carbon build up in the throttle body is normal. If you remove your air cleaner pipe from the throttle, you can look and see if there is any build up. I have 33,000 and NO build up. DC dealers love to make money on this one... a $6.00 bottle of Techron every few fill-ups will keep it clean. Or, use some carb cleaner(Sparingly) to clean the carbon from the inside the throttle body. You can also remove the throttle body/intake. (I have a short cut if anyone wants it that's easy and takes 1/3 the time the dealer takes). This must be done to replace plugs in NA cars.

...so you have to take something apart to "see" the build-up...you reckon the dealer just assumes that everyone has build up and is motivated by the profiteering aspect....like lube jobs and "tune-ups"?

Yes, Wally. To be sure you have any build up, you have to look inside the throttle intake. The dealers will tell you that it's "normal" to have build up at 30,000; you might, depending on fuel used, air filter, extensive idling, etc. But, you might not if you are a savy car owner and simply pay attention. Anyway, don't simply take their word for it. Investigate yourself.

I had the dealer tell me this recently also. In fact Friday before last. I had it in for a few other items and told him again about the issue I have had with my 02 PT where when it is at idle on a cold morning it sounds like it surges. Tach goes up and down etc. I have had the EGR Valve replaced about a year ago this seemed to help for a year or so. The Dealer Mechanic told me that there was a throttle motor in the intake that probably had carbon built up on it. Told me they wanted $139.00 to clean. I put Fuel Injector cleaner in about every 3 months. I see no carbon when I remove the filter. (Aftermarket)
Suggestions?
