I have my PT at dealer this morning for the no crank situation that has been described in the Performance Mods heading.
Will post a fix for this as soon as I get it back today.

Dealer did a check of electrical system and everything checked out OK. He did clean battery terminals. Said that with it being an intermittent problem it would be hard to diagnose until it just wouldn't crank at all.
Kinda understand that but sure don't want it to leave me sitting. Guess I'll just give them a call and let them tow it of it stops on me!

That's the bad thing with any off and on electrical problem , they can never find the problem when it's running , only when it dies .

Did you by chance clean the engine just before the no crank situation? I had a car that would not crank after I washed the engine off. Turns out that some cleaners can get in the battery terminal connections and create a thin film that causes a weak connection. I had interior lights but just not enough oomph to crank it. A simple jiggle of the terminals brought it to life again. Maybe the terminal cleaning did the trick.

Nope, you know that may have been contributing to problem. I am a stickler for a clean engine and areas around it. I am notorious for a liberal application of protectent on hoses and all other things, so that may have been a factor in this. But to this date 07/13/2005 it has not gave me the no crank issue since the fix at dealer. Will make note next time to be more careful around the electrical connections and stuff.
Thanks for the help, I hadn't thought of that.

A tip when you wash/rinse/ your engine compartment......always leave the engine idling while rinsing it off and then take it for a high speed drive down the road to 'dry up' any residue left on the engine parts. The engine heat along with the air will help dry it fast.

I like doing that high speed stuff to dry the outside too. ;D

I know I'm a little late on this thread but just what IS the best way to clean up the PT's engine? I really need to spiff mine up ever since the power steering repair...it looks rather greasy & dirty under the hood now!

If someone could put a list of ideas for cleaning the pt engine compartment i would appreciate it...I believe that a clean engine compartment means a healthier/longer life for the pt. Thanks -Jase

OK this has been going on since my first post on 06/15/2006. Since then the starter has been replaced twice(or so they say) along with the ignition switch. I have since then had to have the car towed twice to the dealer for examine and they find nothing wrong. I even went as far as replacing the battery thinking it may have been a bad cell in battery, giving it enough juice to power lights and all but not enuff oomph to turn engine over.
Did the battery replace about two weeks ago. Went to the Autofair at Lowes MotorSpeedway this weekend with family had a great time, lots of beautiful cars there. Walking back to car I made a passing comment to wife that I bet the car will not crank and sure enough there I am 75 miles away from home and no crank! I called a rollback from my hometown and they said they would come get us and the car. They were going to have to bring another vehicle with them cause the rollback has only enuff seat belts for 3 people and there would be 4 of us. I can understand that. Sure would have hated to have seen that towing bill.
Well while on the phone the gentleman asked me if I had checked all the usual stuff battery cables and such. I told him that I was so disgusted that I had not even raised the hood. Well he prompted me to raise hood and wiggle all cables just in case. Which I did, then I saw the starter AHA! I took the tire tool from the jack and while my wife turned the key I slightly tapped it. VOILA! It started! So it is the starter causing problem. Called dealer today and told him about all of this and he agreed it was starter and they are supposed to order the THIRD starter for it.
Not saying that they may have not actually replaced it on other occasions but I discreetly marked it and took photos....just in case they say it s replaced I can verify.
Sorry for the long post but just had to vent to someone... thanks for listening.

Well Dave at least you got your car started and I assume made it home OK thats whats important. Great idea to document all supposed solutions by your dealer.Hang in there its got to get better.

Yeah we made it home just fine and its cranked every time since then but I know its just a matter of time before it happens again. But at least I know what to do to get it going. Youre right sometimes it takes a while to find these things out. Especially with electrical issues.

OK, heres the lowdown on my starter on my PT. The dealer replaced it once again. When I went to pick it up they said that they may have found what was causing the issue. They said it was the way that I have my amp wired.... Let me explain how I have it wired and you guys can give me your take on it. I have a 8 gauge wire running directly from my positive battery terminal to the amp. I have the 12 volt remote turn on wire which is supposed to be connected to a circuit that has only power when the car is switched on. I tapped on to the cargo lamp in the rear hatch. Seems correct doesn't it?
They were telling me that the amp is trying to power up when the car is cranking and drawing voltage away from the starter and that is causing the starter to fail. They said that with the starter not getting the 12 volts that it needs that is putting a strain on the insides of starter. They suggested wiring the remote turn on wire into wiring harness of radio so that there is power to remote turn on only when the radio is turned on. They showed me that the radio turns off briefly when the car is starting therefore the amp will not be requiring voltage at start up of car.
I told them that I didn't totally agree with them on this. Before I left dealer and in there presence I removed fuses for the amp so that it is not functional. I will keep it like this for a couple of months to see if there is any difference then on the other hand maybe they got me a good starter this time.
Just wanted to check with you guys and see what your thoughts are on this.
