Talk about your free mods. Many of you know that Rick recently upgraded ZZ Taupe's exhaust from a single magnaflow to a dual setup. In his unending generosity, he gave his magnaflow with a nice polished stainless steel anglecut tip to me for free(!). His car is a non-turbo while mine is an '03 GT. These supposedly have differing exhaust pipe sizes. (2.25 for non-turbo vs. 2.5 for the turbo cars, so I hear and have read) Well, tonight just for yucks to see what the muffler would look like, i removed mine and hung the magnaflow under there only to find it was a direct bolt on fit. I measured the inner diameter of the magnaflow pipe at 2.25 yet it still bolts right up to my system. I am wondering if some of the 03 GTs had the smaller pipe or if there is a reduction in the size somewhere upstream.
Rick, the muffler does't seem to be all that much louder than stock but it is quite a bit throatier. I will take the car out later to see how she sounds under load.
I'll keep ya posted.

Good job brian!!!Sometimes you just have to try things to see if it will work without many mods.

The GT's only have the 2.25 exhaust but breathe better with the 2.5

As I understand or at least from what I've read, the turbo is a tad quieter only because the turbo itself acts as somewhat of a muffler. As the exhaust gasses are passed through the turbo, it baffles the noise down some. I've read where some turbo owners are actually driving with no muffler at all and the sound is not much louder than stock.

I thought the pipe was OD measurement (vs ID).

Update on the magnaflow. Under full load the exhaust is no louder than stock. There is a very slight resonance at 1000rpm, when sitting at a stoplight for instance, and if you are cruising a get into the throttle a bit without the tranny downshifting, there is a bit of moan at 2.5-3krpm. The dreaded 3K drone while cruising isn't there. (whew)
Rick, you are right about the turbo being a baffle in the system to keep things quiet. I was actually counting on that being the case.
Tony, I hear ya on the 2.5 flowing better. I'm not too worried about the exhaust being only 2.25" but I did think that the turbo and non-turbo were different...hmmm. I'll have to hit the Service manual to verify the sizes.
Overall conclusion so far is a big "thumbs up". It's a bit louder at idle but not much louder anywhere else, especially full throttle.
My wife grimaced a bit when I first cranked it up in the garage. She was in the bonus room above and heard it. She's afraid I am digressing and becoming like my two ricer neighbors with totally obnoxious exhausts on their Civic and Escort ZX2!

There's nothing wrong with rice as long as it's not high pitched. LOL.
I've got a big can on mine that puts out a low sound that makes it sound awesome to me and through town.
Good job on the mod.

Gary,
Yeah, the Civic actually has a pretty throaty Greddy system on it. It's just very loud at certain rpms. Plus, he gets up in the morning, cranks his car around 6:30 and lets it run for about 20 min before leaving. It's like having a dumptruck running right in front of my house every morning. The other neighbor with the escort just has an all around "loud at any RPM" system and he runs in and out at all hours of the night with his car.
Another Kid a few blocks away has a stock Civic with a horrible "Bees in a can" mmuffler on his...very annoying.

The exhaust size for 'turbo' and 'non turbo' are the same......2.25". Only the tip is bigger.

There are plenty of them here in Morganton.

What's so funny about most of these ricers is the car sounds like it's running 80 when it's barely pushing 30 . If your going to add some GROWL to your car , make sure it comes with the GO .
