Thought I'd start a blog on what I'm up to.......
Recently I purchased a historic building and in the process of restoring it to use as an undetermined purpose (maybe a business, maybe just 'because I can'). This building was orginally a church in a community called Colly west of White Lake in Bladen County prior to 1880. It was moved to White Lake around 1880 and served as a Baptist church until 1967 (see picture). In 1967 it was moved in two pieces 30 miles east to Kelly and served as another Baptist church until it was disbanded in the mid-90's where it was sold to a private party and moved again about 5 miles to a site east of Kelly and near my home. The owner "planned" to make it into a business but the deal fell through and the building sat as a storage use for 10 years and fell into disrepair. I've had my eyes on it for a few years and decided to buy it a few months ago, and have started work on it.
This structure is built in the "post and beam and pegged" way using all heart pine hand hewn beams and posts....11" square seals and floor beams, 5x8" floor and ceiling joists, 5x5" roof beams, and 1" thick heart pine flooring over subflooring. Siding is pine (german) lap boards. Walls are mostly plaster over lathe.
The building (when I got it) had a drywall ceiling over the original tounge and grove heart pine board ceiling both of which I've removed to open the ceiling up to show the hand hewn beams and under roof sheathing (tounge and groove boards). It had a ugly foam backed red carpet glued to the pine flooring which after "much" work was removed revealing the wood floor. I've also replaced the front portion of the building siding (which was water damaged) and replaced the front porch entirely.
This building is over 2100 SF and has a large single room in the main section and 8 smaller rooms in the rear tee and is situated on 5 acres of land. I'll be posting pictures of progress as I go to it this summer. If any of you are around down this way do stop by for a private tour, you're most welcomed...
