A fantastic weekend in Athens Georgia that was a wonderful fundraiser for the American Cancer Society has come to a soggy end.
On Friday, we gathered at the Comfort Inn in Athens and had a great time getting to know some new faces. Several folk took a taxi into downtown Athens for AthFest, a huge music festival there. Others gathered at the Sonic for dinner and a glow show. Sherri Austin from Lenoir NC won the Glow Show.
Saturdy found us at the Georgia Square Mall for a beautiful day. The weather was absolutely gorgeous with a nice breeze coming across the event. We were parked directly in front of the main entrance to the mall where we were seen by thousands! We hade enough parking lot to easily park 150 cars all roped off just for us. We appreciate the 25 PTs that attended our event in the new location.
We had three Georgia Force cheerleaders attend as well as the 2005 Georgia Miss Junior National Teenager, Hayley Wilson. Hayley was just crowned last weekend and she graciously filled in for Jena Sims who had to be away for another event. Autographs and picture taking abounded!
Our remote PT Cruiser race found several cars going behind the wall and into the pits several times! Ultimately, Kevin "The Kid" Watkins got the checkered flag!
After the raffle items were all awarded, the 50/50 drawing was conducted and Alex Autrey won the pot. Alex graciously put his split back into our charity. OK, all of it except a dollar (something about wanting to get four quarters for the "magic fingers" on the bed in his hotel room).
We then departed for a fantastic poker run orchestrated by the Master Poker Run organizer, Jack Scales! What a gorgeous drive in and around Athens that was. We saw "The Tree That Owns Itself," the Georgia Botanical Gardens, and drove across the Elder's Mill Covered Bridge. The Poker Run was won by Ernie and Becky Eison, followed by Danny Vitali and Chuck Carter. They each won fabulous prizes!
Saturday evening we all went to the Elk's Lodge for a great BBQ dinner and awards. The awards for the car show were:
Charity's Choice: Danny Vitali
Best Tailgate Display: Sherri Austin
People's Choice: Danny Vitali
Top Ten:
Sherri Austin
Frank Mullane
Wes Culbertson
Kevin Watkins
Gene McDonald
Dave Fisher
Karen Worsham
Ed Taylor
Chuck Carter
Chuck Causey
We then has a sock hop that started a bit late but was very fun for those that participated. Thanks to Alex and the Atlanta Cruiser Experience for providing the evening entertainment!!
On Sunday morning, the rain arrived to give us a send-off. We gathered at the Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Frank ate some of everything but did not clean his plate properly! Shamey, shamey!!
A very fun weekend with delightful weather. The most important part is that theis small group of PT Cruiser crazies managed to collect enough money to send a $1,500 donation the American Cancer Society!!!!! I am stunned at what you guys and gals are capable of doing!
Many thanks to everyone who had a part in making this happen:
The staff at the Athens Convention and Visitor's Bureau who gave us a ton of help and information.
The staff of the Comfort Inn who offered much assistance and graciousness.
The staff of the Elk's Lodge who helped us have a wonderful evening together.
The staff of the Sonic Drive-in that kicked in a ton of door prizes at the last minute.
Katy Schell and the rest of the Georgia Square management that graciously offered us a very fine facility for our show.
The Georgia Force Cheerleaders who came and signed autographs and posed with the cars.
The 2005 Georgia Miss Junior National Teenager, Hayley Wilson, who brought much delight to us all day and into the evening on Saturday.
Our vendors; Michael Swann, Ray Gilbert, and Richard Brown.
Mr. Mike and Mr. Mike's Upholstery for the donation of the cake as well as other raffle items.
Other door prize and raffle item contributors: Race and Street, Streamline Design, Cruiser Motor Sports, PT Boutique, Wykoff Chrysler, Pep Boys of Athens, From Him Above Embroidery, Cruizer's Cafe, Rafferty's of Athens, Cracker Barrel of Athens, Cherokee Connection, Regis Salons, Paul Bennett Salon, YearOne, Diecast Road, and many individuals. We sincerely appreciate everyone who graciously donated to our event!
None of this would have meant a thing without the PT Cruiser family showing up. I applaud and salute each of you!
Lastly, I wish to thank Alex Autrey (Atlanta Cruiser Experience) and Kevin Watkins (South Metro PT Cruisers), and Jack Scales for their enormous assistance is putting on this event. You guys are AWESOME!
