Speedway In Lights Powered By TVA Set For November 19 Opening
MORE LIGHTS PROMISES TO BRIGHTEN HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA
The region’s most dazzling holiday light show returns to Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway November 19. Speedway In Lights, Powered by TVA, kicks off its eighth season with more lights and a route that once again offers visitors the chance to take a lap around “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile.”
Holiday light seekers will circle the concrete oval as part of their festive drive and also may visit Christmas Village, which returns to its popular infield location. In addition to spicing up the region’s holiday season, proceeds from the event will benefit the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, brightening the lives of thousands of children.
Event organizers will add thousands of new lights for the 2004-’05 edition. The highly popular York Ice Skating Rink also returns for the holidays and again will be located in the BMS front parking lot adjacent to Volunteer Parkway (Hwy. 11E). The ice rink will open to Speedway In Lights visitors during evening hours for an additional charge.
Returning Speedway In Lights favorites include the animated snowman attraction, which features flying snowballs that build a huge snowman upon impact with the ground; and Dinosaur Village, with its erupting volcano and six dinosaurs. Other favorites include the cannon shot, the poinsettia wreath and candelabra. Of course, motorsports-flavored displays will occupy spots throughout the drive. More than 1.5 million lights and 200-plus displays make up this year’s Speedway In Lights, Powered by TVA.
As always, the light extravaganza features crafts in Christmas Village, where children can pose for photos with Santa, roast marshmallows and enjoy hot chocolate. Proceeds from Speedway In Lights Powered by TVA benefit the Bristol Chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, a non-profit foundation dedicated to distributing funds to qualified children’s charities. Funds from the foundation directly aid children in the Tri-Cities area. To date, Speedway Children’s Charities has raised more than $1.75 million for area agencies.
Tickets for Speedway In Lights, open nightly 6-10 p.m., Nov. 19-Jan. 8, are available at the BMS gate. Ticket prices for cars are $7 Sunday through Thursday, and $10 Friday and Saturday. Activity van tickets are $12 Sunday through Thursday, and $15 Friday and Saturday. Bus tickets are $50 Sunday through Thursday, and $65 Friday and Saturday.
The York Ice Skating Rink will open six days a week, beginning on Tuesday, November 16 and running through Sunday, February 6. Tuesday through Thursday, the rink will open from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday hours are from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday the rink will open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The rink will close each Monday throughout the period for general maintenance.
